Cloisters Portal

Image                                                Selected details

the portal opening to the cloister decorated by scenes from Jesus’ childhood and the legend of Theophilus.

The lower part of the tympanum, the lintel shows Mary’s role in Jesus’ childhood. The four scenes represented are Jesus’ birth in the manger, the offering in the temple of Jerusalem after his birth, the persecution of children by King Herod and the flight into Egypt of Joseph and Mary to protect the child.

In the top left-hand corner, Theophilus, the bishop’s deacon, who, deprived of its functions and impoverished, made a pact with the devil. On the left, he is on his knees with his hands joined between those of the devil. Behind him, the Jewish magician stands as a go-between for the devil and the priest. He puts his hand on the priest’s shoulder and holds the sealed pact in the other one. Second scene: after getting rich, Theophilus distributes the money received from the devil, standing behind him. Third stage: repentant Theophilus is kneeling down before the altar of the Virgin Mary. Mary saves the priest in the fourth scene by slaying the demon with a sword resembling a cross, and she gets the pact back. At the top, the Bishop of Adana shows the pact he holds in his hands to his disciples, which reads «carta Theophili» (the Charter of Theophilus).
