South rose

The South Rose

See ilmage

The 13-meter wide south rose and was built around 1260. It was redesigned at several times and completely restored in the 19th century.

It is dedicated to the New Testament. Two radical restorations in the 18th and 19th centuries disrupted the initial program. The central figure is an image of the Christ from Revelation. He sits on a throne, before the eight lamps and above the Lamb and the book with seven seals, and He is surrounded by the four evangelists.

The Apostles, some martyrs, bishops and deacons, virgins and wise men are scattered in the first two circles. In the third one, seven scenes from Saint-Matthew’s life and an Annunciation are to be found. In the last circle, 20 angels carrying a candle or a censer, a martyr, the escape from Egypt etc. The South Rose thus symbolizes the triumphant Christ sitting in Heaven, surrounded by all those who were his witnesses on Earth.
