West facade

See here

The construction of this façade began around 1200 and the towers were completed in 1240 (for the North Tower) and 1250 (for the South Tower). Its front is 63m high and 41m wide. Its simplicity and harmony of vertical and horizontal lines fascinate both the architects and the public. It is a masterpiece of balance and harmony.

From bottom to top, four powerful buttresses strengthen the towers which rise into the sky. The towers are 20 meters higher than the large gallery, which connects both of them and lies on thin columns.

On top of the gallery and on the towers, the famous gargoyles and chimeras abound, easily noticeable on the images enlarged with the zoom.

La grande rose ouest The great western rose, created around 1220, radiates from the center of both the facade and the gallery of the Virgin. The statue of the Virgin with a child, in the middle, and the statues of Adam and Eve, placed in the middle of the two bays, covered with blind roses, date from the 19th century.

In the Gallery of the Kings, below, the statues of 28 Kings of Israel and Judah, destroyed during the revolution (they were mistaken with the Kings of France) and recreated in the 19th century, stand before the anonymous crowd. On the lower floor, the big three portals are aligned: the portal of the Jugement in the middle, the portal of the Virgin in the north, on the left, and theportal of Saint-Ann (mother of Virgin Mary), in the south, on the right.

On the buttresses, four statues, sheltered in niches, were recreated in the 19th century. They stand for the deacon Saint-Etienne on the left, a bishop, presumably Saint-Denis, on the right, and on both parts of the portal, two allegories, the Church on the left and the Synagogue on the right.
